In 2001 the Trust for Public Land helped the town of North Andover to protect the 27-acre Carter Hill property as open space. The parcel's location near Lake Cochichewick, the town's sole drinking water source, and the largest freshwater body in Essex County, made the protection of these scenic woodlands and rolling hayfields a high priority. Carter Hill is situated amidst over 500 acres of undeveloped public and private open space, and includes outstanding vistas of the lake as well as its surrounding fields and woodlands. It offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching andother low-impact recreation.
Community Preservation Act funds were used for this purchase, making North Andover the first community in Massachusetts to utilize money authorized under this Act. Additional funding was provided by the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs in the form of a Self-Help grant.
